The Real Evils of ASUU's Actions

After a short hiatus, I seem to have found some courage to scribble out some issues as regards my dear or not so dear country. ASUU strike has been humorously described as a yearly ritual in Nigeria. Unfortunately, we seem to have forgotten the damage the strike has caused and will continue to cause if things are not done right.

The country's educational system is already in shambles for a lack of a better word. Many of us are jammed by JAMB severally before settling for a course we never wanted to study. The case is worsened when we have to spend over 7 years for a 4-year course when schools in sane climes are offering crash courses to reduce the number of years spent in school.

If we think the lengthened duration in school is the only pain we suffer, let's think of how public school will compete with their international student counterpart in the labour market. Remember that an average Nigerian gets into public universities at about 20 + another 5 years in school and 1 year NYSC.  This sums up to a 26-years-old graduate competing with a vibrant and more exposed 23-years-old chap who has not been subjected to different kinds of emotional and mental stress.

If you think we are done with the effects of the ASUU strike mess, take a look at what the pass 8 months of inactivity has caused young, energetic minds across the nation. Some of us are close to our Expected Day of Delivery (EDD), others have resorted to drugs, stealing, and other vices. What do you expect, "an idle man remains the devil's tool."

My major concern comes from the fact that we have taken this mediocrity as a norm, not realising that the evils we stare in the face will come back to harm sooner than expected. If maga no pay yahoo boy again, e go scam Nigerians. If drug addicts no get juice again, e go sell him paper property to get supplies. Thief na thief and e go always find something to steal or someone to kidnap.

The federal government has no plans to end the strike or this could be fake news. But the fact is that they are not affected and would want it to continue to give their children an advantage in the labor market if they decide to return to the country.

I think I already overstayed my visit here but what do I even know sef. Did I remember to say that it is part of the ploy to starve the ordinary Nigerian of resources to help them develop?
