The Cost or Not of A Project
So I am not going to rant about the average cost of construction projects or putting in place infrastructure in Nigeria compared to other parts of the world, at least not on the post. What really bothers me is the "ceremony" that goes into the "commissioning" of such projects, irrespective of their size or nature.
It is annoying enough that a project is supposedly completed with outrageously inflated figures. But why would it cost so much to bring the project to "existence." It is only in Nigeria that a project that cost about #10 billion is commissioned with #2 billion, just saying. The shenanigans that come with such events is even unimaginable, with celebrities sometimes performing. I won't talk much about the reception that greets such projects from the citizenry that is supposed to demand even more from the governor, senator, local government chairman, or whoever is commissioning the project. Sorry if I sound a bit off, but that road, borehole, solar light project or any other infrastructure you are rejoicing about is your right and the provider should not be celebrated like a god. It's just like your child singing your praises for providing dinner.
Yes, I know the readers might seem enlightened enough not to go for such carnivals. But trust me, events of the past few months have shown that "literacy" no be by PhD.
And just when we thought, we have heard it all, a certain governor goes ahead to declare a public holiday to commission projects, while ordering businesses in a particular area to close shop. Why must a struggling shopowner living from hand to mouth suffer because the president-elect is coming to town. Really, we ain't just ready yet.
But what do I even know sef.
