NLC #1 Million Minimum Wage - Joke of the Year
I remember posting some time ago that the NLC cannot represent the interest of the Nigerian worker - formal and informal. If an Ayuba Waba, the former labour leader, could adorn his wrist with a Patek Philippe worth millions of naira and drive one of the latest SUVs, I wonder how Nigerians expect the guy to fight for their rights. The recent statement by the current leader of the labour group proposing a minimum wage of #1,000,000 remains the biggest joke of the century.
First of, there is no way the federal government or any subnational government is paying that kind of amount to any worker. Remember that some states are yet to implement the #30k minimum wage while others are even owing unpaid salaries.
Even if the government is miraculously able to pay the #1 million naira minimum wage, what happens to people in the private sector or even worse, the informal sector of the economy.
If only the leadership of the labour union understood the concept of inflation (demand-pull and cost-push), maybe they would reconsider their proposal and focus on real, practicable, and impactful suggestions.
What is the NLC and other labour bodies and indeed Civil Society Groups doing about the "underperforming" refineries? Why is the NLC not talking about the safety of workers across the nation? What is the NLC and TUC saying about taxes and levies on businesses - big, small, and medium, across industries? Why is the focus almost always on the federal government?
In case the NLC is unaware, labour welfare goes beyond remuneration. But what do I even know sef?
